Take Steps with Great Steps... Around the World!

Health and comfortable living are two things that Great Steps really likes to embody and pass on to others. Not only do we like to help others live comfortably, but we also like to make sure we are taking the right steps (literally) to ensure a healthy lifestyle-- 24,901.55 steps to be exact.

From May 16th through September 6th, we have decided to walk halfway across the world-- yes, you heard that right, the world-- and we would like everybody else to join us too. We have 15 weeks to do this so we are all shooting for 10,000 steps a day, equaling around 5 miles. We would like everybody to record his or her steps on a weekly basis. If you are not able to take many steps in a day, you can always try to make up for it another day. If you go over 10,000 steps- even better! All we ask is that you do your best and have fun!
If you are someone that needs a little more motivation than just the satisfaction of getting halfway around the world, don’t worry. Challenges will be made and we have plenty of prizes to giveaway, so stay tuned on our facebook and twitter pages. Kick it into high gear and bring out your competitive side! Find a partner to walk with and maybe we can actually make it around the entire world. The possibilities are endless, help us raise awareness!

How To Prevent Sports Injuries

The weather is finally warm and summer is on its way! During the summer people are typically more active; thus the number of sports injuries increase during the summer months. The most common sports injuries we treat at Great Steps Orthotics and Prosthetics are from bicycling, playing basketball, baseball or soccer. We also treat injuries from jumping on trampolines, horseback riding, weightlifting and playing volleyball. These injuries typically affect knees and feet. Summer weather is short in Minnesota. We want to be active outside enjoying this warm weather while it lasts! Although being active is important, we need to protect our bodies from physical injuries.

Steps To Preventing Sports Injuries

Get in Shape
When playing sports competitively or for recreation, it is important to be in good physical shape. Simply playing a sport does not get you into shape. You must properly train before participating in a sport. Many athletes jump into playing a sport before their body is ready to handle the physical demand.

Warm Up Before Playing
This goes along with getting in shape. It is very important to get your muscles warmed up and ready for the game. The goal of warming up is to raise the temperature of your muscles to improve muscle elasticity. This will help prevent strains and pulls. The key to a successful warm up is to tailor your warm up routine to the sport you are playing and the pace of your sports league. If you are unsure where to start, ask friends, coaches, or even our practitioners at Great Steps Orthotics and Prosthetics.

Avoid Playing Sports If You Feel Pain
You need to listen to your body. If you feel pain in your body, that could be a sign of an injury developing. Many athletes are tempted to push through the pain for the love of the sport. But keep in mind: pushing through the pain could cause a more serious injury that could keep you out of the game for an extended period of time.

Athletic Orthotics
At Great Steps Orthotics and Prosthetics we have the knowledge and equipment to care for your sports injuries. We have worked with professional and collegiate level sport teams such as the Minnesota Wild, Timberwolves, Lynx, University of Minnesota, St. Cloud State University and St. Johns University. We provide athletic orthoses and athletic equipment modification. These devices allow for better movement, performance, alignment, and ensure a great fit. Following these tips will not only help prevent future sport injuries, but it will also make you a better athlete.
