The History of Prosthetics

Prosthetic Care dates back to the fifth Egyptian Dynasty (2750-2625 B.C.). Archaeologists have discovered prosthetic splints used during this period. The earliest known written reference to an artificial limb was made around 500 B.C. Herodotus (an Ancient Greek Historian) wrote about a prisoner who escaped his chains and shackles by cutting off his foot and later replacing it with a wooden substitute.

A French Surgeon (AmbroiseParé) introduced amputation as a life saving medical procedure in 1529. Dr. Pare began developing prosthetic limbs soon after his first amputation surgery.

The American Prosthetic field quickly gained prominence during the Civil War. It has been reported that there were at least 30,000 life saving amputations on Union side soldiers alone.

Modern Technology has revolutionized the prosthetic industry. Today, advanced plastics and carbon-fiber composites can make a prosthetic limb lighter, stronger and more realistic. Electronic technologies make today's advanced prosthetics more controllable, even capable of automatically adapting their function during certain tasks, such as gripping or walking. Specialized componentry allows our patients to enjoy hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Our customized prosthetic devices allow an individual to walk, run and swim.

At Great Steps O & P, we actively pursue and master all designs and technologies that allow us to enhance the lives of our patients. We understand that each patient is unique and important regardless of abilities or disabilities.
