What is Positional Plagiocephaly?

Positional Plagiocephaly is the flattening of an infant’s head. Sleeping or lying in the same position for long periods of time in cribs, strollers or playpens most often causes Plagiocephaly. It can also be caused by weak neck muscle problems; that make it difficult for an infant to change their position. Plagiocephaly is common; all babies up until the age of one have a flexible skull, thus making their heads easily moldable.

The Treatment

The most common way to treat Positional Plagiocephaly is to create a cranial helmet (often referred to as a baby helmet) that will act as a hard shell around the baby’s soft head. These helmets have a hard exterior with soft foam interior. The hard shell protects the baby’s head while the soft lining provides comfort and room to grow. It also molds the baby’s head to the desired sphere-like shape. Helmets are typically on a baby’s head for 3 to 6 months; throughout this time the helmet will be adjusted for the baby’s growth and closely monitored. Less severe Positional Plagiocephaly can be corrected by strengthening the muscles in the upper body, learning to roll, learning to crawl, or reaching for objects.

John and Kristie’s other goal is to make sure that all who come to Great Steps feels like family. One unique way they attempt to do this is by focusing on the atmosphere in which the patient’s receive their care. The warm and inviting front desk staff and waiting room, the 8 uniquely themed exam rooms, our onsite technical workshop, combined with our professional staff’s personality and humor all attribute to the exceptional experience our patient’s claim to have here at Great Steps.

The ‘Sports Dorm’ exam room is popular among the athletes. Each wall decorated with sporting equipment according to Season, it is sure to capture the heart of athletes of any age.

Our ‘Canine Club’, inspired by one of our first patients, is for our dog lovers. In this room you are able to see all of our staff members that own dogs. This is a great way to make a connection between our staff and patients.

Another popular room is our ‘Entertainer’ exam room. Here you will find memorabilia of the theatre from different eras.

‘The Clubhouse’ provides a kid-friendly environment for our patients and family members. The Mickey and Friends decals and play house are sure to keep the kids entertained and the parents happy while the patient receives the care they need.
